Brazilian Finally Recorded!!!

Webcast Academy - Thu, 2006-08-10 15:30
Hey, guys, I'm uploading part of our Intern Webcast today. We missed Jeff, but Brad and Doug did a wonderful job! It was a pity there were some glitches at the end. But I managed to talk to Trevor for a while in a call. Of course, crazy things are still happening... Well, during the skypecast I could record everybody, including myself, without a USB and no virtual cables. Then when I moved to a private call with Trevor, total mystery. First, Audacity recorded only me, then something happened and only Trevor was recorded, then it was my voice again. I wonder if Trevor clicked something on his end. My question: why could I record everything in the skypecast and then when I was with Trevor Audacity recorded only one end?

Visitors, Normalizing and Digital Chalkie

Webcast Academy - Wed, 2006-08-09 18:53

LARC is giving a workshop to 14 Vietnamese educators this weekend, and I would like to bring them into the chat room for the broadcast this Sunday to let them experience the power of an interactive live broadcast. I hope this is appropriate.

I tried the order that Jeff mentioned in the last broadcast for sound editing, normalizing and then amplifying. This produced really great results in recording Spanish question prompts in Sound Studio 3, so thanks for the tip.

I enjoyed the digital chalkie broadcast, especially all the detail about preparing a school class for blogging.

Final Audacity craziness for today

Webcast Academy - Mon, 2006-08-07 15:59

I recorded a Skype call while broadcasting using Simplecast (I think I was broadcasting) and then normalized selectively, compressed, which seems to also normalize then normalized selectively again and cut out some gaps. All suggestions and advice are welcomed and appreciated!

More Audacity craziness

Webcast Academy - Mon, 2006-08-07 15:45

I'm still not sure I understand the difference between normalize and equalize... but here are some more efforts for your listening craziness and hopefully comments and suggestions. You can tell by the name what I did to each one. They are all from the Simplecast recording (an mp3) I forgot to click the Audacity button. Maybe that's the lesson right there... don't try to edit from the Simplecast recording.... (isn't that what we've been learning????) anyway - can you tell the difference and if you import an mp3 that was saved in Simplecast into Audacity and then save it as a mp3- are you double

Recording in Audacity with SAM on WinXP

Webcast Academy - Sun, 2006-08-06 23:28

I broadcast on Sandbox A. I'm not really sure I was broadcasting but I heard the echo, my meters moved and I followed the old SAM screencast. I then recorded in Audacity. The attachments are -the Audacity file saved as a mp3, the Audacity saved as WAV and the stream, saved in SAM as an mp3, opened in Audacity and edited just for length and saved. I had to close the file and just click save or it wanted to save it as an Audacity file or cause me to have to export it as mp3, which would have meant saving an mp3 again as an mp3 which I thought would be a bad idea... not sure where to go with this next. Can anyone hear a difference? None of the files are edited for sound quality.

Where is the newscreen cast on not using a USB micro???

Webcast Academy - Sun, 2006-08-06 21:08

Jeff mentioned he had recently uploaded a new screencast on working without a USB micro. Can anyone tell me where it is?

Am I the only one who finds it difficult to find my way around? There is nothing I can find in site map, nor in the list of screencasts - as far as I can see.

Liz and Randy - First Telephony Call Recording

Webcast Academy - Fri, 2006-08-04 01:19

This was our first attempt at recording a call. We think it turned out pretty well considering the problems we had over the last few days figuring how to get the settings correct.

Liz and I plan on hosting webcasts dealing with high school reform, technology and the realm of 21st century learning. So our first recording has Liz sharing some of her positive interactions with department chairs at her high school in a meeting she had today.

We enthusiastically await your feedback!

Audio recording

Webcast Academy - Thu, 2006-08-03 22:40

I used a small piece of a skpe conversation that Lee and I had while she was helping me with WireTap Pro. The first attachment is the segment edited and the second attachment is the same audio unedited.

There are 4-5 places where her speech is slurred. It really bothers me but I was unable to correct it. I hope someone else has some ideas about how to avoid the "slurring sound" or how to fix it.

I opened the aiff file from wiretap pro in audacity and then in both cases exported as mp3 files to post here.

Recording both ends of a telephone conversation on a Mac

Webcast Academy - Wed, 2006-08-02 16:51

OK, this is pretty primitive. A D-, but as my son did at the age of 2 1/2 when he turned on a new Mac clamshell notebook, I clapped my hands and said 'I did it!'. The recording was made using the iSight camera mike, as my other M-audio proved to be too low in Sunday's webcast, on a G4 desktop with 450 mhz processor and 1 GB of ram. I followed the instructions on the MacDev Center recommended in the Book of Webcasting. I downloaded Audio Hijack and Soundflower, played around with the configurations until it (almost) worked.

The next step for me is to get another USB interface, possibly even a mixer or pre-amp, and try this again. It might be that the lack of processing speed prevents a quality recording. As always this is a journey and I'm happy to have made the first step.

Audio Editing in Audacity

Webcast Academy - Wed, 2006-08-02 07:29

Hello Everyone,

I have created a page in the Book of Webcasting on basic Audio Editing in Audacity. It is simply a "how-to" and an introduction to editing in Audacity. Hope to follow up with a screencast soon.

Testing BuzzBoost from FeedBurner

Webcast Academy - Wed, 2006-08-02 06:48
I just came accross an interesting feature at FeedBurner. It's called BuzzBoost. It gives you a little Javascript that aggregates other blogs you write, so you can share them on other websites without duplicating the post. Howeve I still haven't been able to get it to point to a particular post. It just displays the latest n posts. Inserting the script below displays the latest 3 posts from my blog (because I have configured it to display 3). I wonder what will happen when I post again. Will it continue showing these 3, or will it show the latest 3. We'll find out soon. Those who are keen on trying this out can register for Feedburner's free service: http://www.feedburner.com

Excerpt from sunday's Skypecast

Webcast Academy - Wed, 2006-08-02 06:36
Hello, Finally posting an excerpt from last Sunday's Skypecast for the class of 1.2. This is the part when Jeff had logged of for a while. I had to do a bit of editing. I reduced the volume of my voice and amplified the voices that were coming from the other end. It has come out quite decent, except for the echo just at the end. I think that was the time when I was logged onto both the Skypecasts.

Excerpt from Skype interview Part 2

Webcast Academy - Wed, 2006-08-02 06:28

Good! ... I had breakfast while the attachment was uploading....

I've posted this MP3 file because I'd much appreciate comments, tips for improvment. I regard it as an exercise for the assignments here.

Details

I recorded the interview, conducted on Skype, using PowerGram. PowerGram records in ogg, so I transferred to Audacity (straightforward) did minimal editing and then saved (exported) as MP3.

Questions:

1. Are PoweGram recordings of good enough standard for webcasting?
2. What might have caused the echo in Paul's recording? (There was no loudspeaker).
3. How can one avoid getting echo?
