EdTechTalk Brainstorm - July 20, 2006

Webcast Academy - Thu, 2006-07-27 12:56

Hi, I am sending along the edited audio for the EdTechTalk Brainstorm for last Thursday. I hosted the show for Doug Symington. Discussions on the show centered around blog software such as elgg and WordPress and its application for schools, and the EducationBridges Elgg.

Dave from Florida joined in and talked about his experience setting up a blog for his region and had quite a bit to contribute. Paul Ellerman, Cathy and chat room participants had information to add as well.

The recording starts after the show began due to technical difficulties...mosty my own! Please excuse the audio quality..voice levels were not even and I had to resort to a Planetronics headset after my mic broke right before showtime! I fixed it as well as I could for the time had to edit...it is very time consuming to fix if not recorded well to start with.

Xinha Download

Webcast Academy - Thu, 2006-07-27 11:28
I thought I would follow up to Jeff's screenshot with a link to the download page for the editor he used for adding the flash player on your posts. Go to firefox..(download it if you dont have it already) and go to ...Tools...Extensions...Get More Extensions... and find Xenha. Here is a direct link to the download page I used but it works best if you go to the extensions and click on get more extensions since it installs the extension directly into Firefox for you. Hello everyone!

This is Erika Cruvinel from Brazil! My friend Carla will introduce me to the group and I will introduce her! We think that it is much easier to talk about someone else than about ourselves!

Wow! This is fun and scary for me!

It's a pleasure to be here with you all. I'm sure it will be a thrilling experience!

Paul Reid - Intern 1.2 Introduction

Webcast Academy - Tue, 2006-07-25 12:19

Hi all,

I don't have Xinha in my Camino browser. So here is an MP3 of my introduction (872kb, 1:51).

I'm very glad to be taking part in this webcast 1.2 internship and would like to thank Brad Hicks for recommending me the fantastic Webcast Academy.

I am the founder of Digital Chalkie and my goal is to help Brad with the production of webcasts for Digital Chalkie in the future. The purpose of Digital Chalkie is to provide a hub for Australian educators using ICT to engage and facilitate the best educational outcomes for their students. The domain name uses the word ‘chalkie’ as an affectionately defunct Australian term for teachers. The goal is to establish a hub/magazine/think-tank for teachers to support each other and to collaborate in the use of ICT.

I look forward to meeting up with you in the webcasts. Would it be possible for the webcasts to occur earlier for the weekend show? 12am GMT perhaps?

Kind regards,

Paul Reid

Jeff Lebow Introduction

Webcast Academy - Tue, 2006-07-25 04:39

Wow, this is really fun listening to introductions - learned some new things about people I've 'virtually' known for a while and enjoying making some new web acquaintances.

I realize now, I should have included some information about how to created a download link and flash player option for playing the audio. If I don't fall asleep on the keyboard, I'll try to get that up tonight. If not, it will be up very soon.

Susan's Introduction 07_24_06

Webcast Academy - Tue, 2006-07-25 03:27

Hi everyone! I was sorry to miss the first adventure with the new group of interns but look forward to working with you and supporting you as much as I can!

I did use a few filters on this recording but am unhappy with the underwater sound of it. I normalized it and faded in the beginning. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to get rid of the underwater sound, it would be great! I'd also like to stick one of those flash players here to play it, but am not sure how to do it. ???

Jeff, the screenshot video that you made as the introduction was fabulous. I would like to learn how to do that - exactly what you did. It would be a nice way to do my report. In fact, I have a recurring problem with my Nicecast which I could record and share! How did you make that???

My Introduction - Randy

Webcast Academy - Tue, 2006-07-25 01:02

Hi everyone...

I've had Audacity on my computer for some time, but never really had a good reason to use it. What better time...

This is going to be great fun, I think. I am looking forward to speaking with and learning from a wide array of people.

Introduction

Webcast Academy - Mon, 2006-07-24 21:27

My message from Safari is that this is experimental and they cannot guarantee it's going to work so don't send them any error messages.  Hopefully, it will suffice.  I did not quite follow Jeff's instructions here about .rtf vs. .html, but I'll just post this shall I? and see how it looks.

Hello, everyone!  This is Trevor Shanklin.  Kiralyfi is the Hungarian word for prince.  I lost the title when my son was born, but use it anyway.

Webcast Report - Graham Stanley

Webcast Academy - Sun, 2006-07-23 19:19
Webcasting Setup:

I'd hoped to try both Sam (using my PC) and Nicecast (on my Mac), but ended up just using Nicecast to stream because of lack of time. I'm hoping to try out Sam in August. I've included the details of my PC below too, as I've been using both during the Skypecast, and for recording.

PC: AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8 GHz, 768MB RAM

- Windows XP (Home) 2002 , Service Pack 2

Mac: Mac Mini (Power Mac 10.2), Power PC G4, (1.5)

- Mac OS X - Version 10.4.6, Memory 512 MB DDR SDRAM
Wireless AirPort Extreme

As I said above, I've recently been using Nicecast to stream the audio. At first, I found it easier to concentrate on managing the hosting of a Skypecast, and while I was doing this I played with capturing the audio using various tools, from Audio Hijack (on the Mac), Audacity, and PowerGramo and Hot Recorder (on the PC).

Webcast Report - Lee Baber

Webcast Academy - Sun, 2006-07-23 13:44
Hardware --
PowerBook G4
Mac OS X - Version 10.4.7
Memory 512 MB DDR SDRAM
Wireless AirPort Extreme

For software I use Nicecast, Skype and WireTapPro for streaming and recording with the Nicecast recording the audio as well for backup. I use Audacity or GarageBand for post-production of audio. I have used a Planetronics headset with mic and mic mute/headphone volume controls, a usb LogiTech mic, and am now experimenting with an M-Audio FastTrack recording interface (mic pre-amp and digital converter) with a Shure SM57 mic.

For me the biggest hurdle initially was broadcasting from within the school network. I could not connect to the stream due to filters at schools so I had to be connected by the home team (Dave, Jeff, Alex, etc) and host from Skype which does work at the school. From home streaming is easy, but I had to work on making sure all the audio settings on the mac were set correctly so I could be heard on the stream. By watching the audio LEDs in Nicecast, I know if I am getting a signal from my voice as well as from the participants joining me. Echo/Sound Test Service (echo123 in Skype) will give you a connection to test this detail.

Our featured guest this show was Susan Appleton, one of the teacher coordinators for the Bunbury Senior High School BEACh (Bunbury Extension and Challenge) Program. This program seeks to extend students academically. Sue gave an excellent account of the program and the impacts that it has had to date on the students and teachers involved. We look forward to some follow-up sessions with Sue in the months to come about other school programs she is involved with.

Webcaster Report: Doug Symington

Webcast Academy - Wed, 2006-07-19 00:09

For my "rig" I've been using a Dell Latitude D800 1.50 GHz laptop with a Pentium M processor and 512 MB of RAM. I've also used a USB microphone and wireless (802.11g) internet connection.

For software I've used SAM Broadcaster, Virtual Audio Cables / Audio Repeater, Skype and Audacity for streaming, recording and post-production of audio. For me the biggest hurdles to overcome have been getting audio settings as they should be so that "both sides" of the conversation can be heard over the stream, "issues" within Skype and post-production itself.
